CBAP certification 2026: requirements, cost and exam weight by knowledge area

By Stephen Adindu, CBAP, PMP, Lead Coach at The Career Accelerators. Last updated October 2026.

The CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) is IIBA's senior certification for business analysts. To qualify you need 7,500 hours of business analysis work in the last 10 years, 35 hours of professional development in the last 4 years, and two professional references. The exam is 120 scenario-based questions in 210 minutes. IIBA charges US$145 to apply and US$350 (members) or US$505 (non-members) for the exam.

This guide covers who the CBAP is for, how to check your eligibility, what it costs, what the exam tests, and how to prepare. All figures come from IIBA's own CBAP page and the CBAP Handbook (May 2026 edition), linked at the end.

Key takeaways
  • The CBAP is for experienced analysts: about five or more years of business analysis work.
  • Your hours must cover at least 4 of the 6 BABOK knowledge areas, with 900 hours in each.
  • Once approved, you have one year and up to three attempts to pass.
  • Requirements Analysis and Design Definition is 30% of the exam, double any other area.
  • You recertify every three years with 60 Continuing Development Units.

What is the CBAP certification?

The CBAP is the highest of IIBA's three core business analysis certifications. It shows that you can lead business analysis work on complex projects, not just take part in it. The ECBA is the entry point for people with no experience, and the CCBA sits in between.

If you are still deciding which level fits you, this table shows the main differences.

Certification Who it's for Experience required Exam
ECBA (Entry Certificate in Business Analysis) New and aspiring analysts None 50 questions, 75 minutes
CCBA (Certification of Capability in Business Analysis) Analysts with 2–3 years' experience 3,750 hours in the last 7 years, 21 PD hours, 2 references 130 questions, 180 minutes
CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) Senior analysts, 5+ years 7,500 hours in the last 10 years, 35 PD hours, 2 references 120 questions, 210 minutes

Not at 7,500 hours yet? Start with our ECBA exam prep or CCBA certification course, and come back to the CBAP when your hours are in place.

Are you eligible for the CBAP?

IIBA checks four things when you apply. Work through this list before you pay the application fee.

Requirement What IIBA asks for How to check it
Work experience 7,500 hours of business analysis work within the last 10 years List each project with dates and your hours on business analysis tasks.
Knowledge area coverage At least 900 hours in each of 4 of the 6 BABOK knowledge areas (3,600 hours in total) Map your project tasks to the knowledge areas listed under the exam section below.
Professional development 35 hours in the last 4 years, aligned to the BABOK knowledge areas Keep your course certificates. An IIBA Endorsed Education Provider's certificate shows the PD hours.
References 2 references who have known you for at least 6 months, contactable at a work email address Ask early. Personal email addresses are not accepted.

The knowledge area rule is the one people miss. Logging 7,500 hours is not enough if most of them sit in a single area. Before you apply, add up your hours per area and make sure at least four of them reach 900.

How much does the CBAP cost in 2026?

IIBA lists these fees in US dollars on its CBAP page. Fees change, so check the page before you pay.

Fee IIBA member Non-member
Application (non-refundable, valid 12 months) US$145 US$145
Exam US$350 US$505
Exam rewrite US$295 US$450
Recertification (every 3 years) US$85 US$120

Your other cost is preparation, including the 35 PD hours you need to apply. At TCA, the CBAP prep course comes in three options. The self-paced course is C$399. The instructor-led course is C$899. An all-inclusive package at C$1,799 also covers the IIBA membership, application and exam fees. Prices are as listed on our CBAP course page at the time of writing.

What is on the CBAP exam?

The exam has 120 multiple-choice questions, built around case studies and scenarios. You have 210 minutes. You can take it online with a remote proctor or at a PSI test centre.

Questions are spread across the six BABOK knowledge areas. One area carries almost a third of the marks:

CBAP exam weighting by knowledge area (source: IIBA CBAP Handbook, May 2026)
Requirements Analysis and Design Definition   30%
Requirements Life Cycle Management   15%
Strategy Analysis   15%
Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring   14%
Solution Evaluation   14%
Elicitation and Collaboration   12%

Because the questions are scenario-based, memorising BABOK definitions will not get you through. You need to read a situation and pick the best next step. That is a skill you build by working practice questions and reviewing why each wrong answer is wrong.

How do you apply for the CBAP?

  1. Log your hours. Record your 7,500 hours of business analysis work, broken down by knowledge area.
  2. Complete your 35 PD hours. They must fall within the last four years.
  3. Line up two references. Each must have known you for at least six months and use a work email address.
  4. Submit your application on iiba.org. You have one year from purchase to complete and submit it.
  5. Book your exam once approved. Approval starts a new one-year window. Each exam attempt you buy is valid for six months, or until that window ends, whichever comes first.
  6. Sit the exam. You get up to three attempts within the year, so take your first attempt early enough to leave room for a retake.

How should you prepare for the CBAP exam?

Plan your study time in proportion to the exam weights. A simple rule is to give Requirements Analysis and Design Definition about twice the time of any other area, since it carries 30% of the questions.

Phase Focus What you should finish with
1. Baseline Take a full-length practice exam before you study. A score per knowledge area showing where to start.
2. Core study Work through the six knowledge areas, weakest first and Requirements Analysis and Design Definition in most depth. Notes on the tasks, inputs, outputs and techniques for each area.
3. Scenario practice Answer practice questions by knowledge area and review every wrong answer. A list of the question patterns you keep missing.
4. Exam rehearsal Sit timed, full-length mocks: 120 questions in 210 minutes. Steady scores across areas and a pacing plan for exam day.

How we prepare analysts for the CBAP at TCA

The Career Accelerators is an IIBA Endorsed Education Provider. Our CBAP course is taught by CBAP-certified business analysts, and the certificate of completion shows 36 IIBA PD hours, which covers the 35 you need. The course includes practice tests, full mock exams, an exam simulation portal with questions grouped by knowledge area, and support with your IIBA application.

How do you keep your CBAP?

The CBAP is valid for three years. To recertify, you earn and record 60 Continuing Development Units (CDUs) in IIBA's BA Development Log and pay the recertification fee. CDUs come from activities such as training, conferences and contributing to the profession. IIBA's CBAP Recertification Handbook lists what counts.

Is the CBAP worth it?

The CBAP is not required to work as a business analyst. For a first BA role, skills and hands-on experience matter more than any certificate. Where it pays off is later, when you are competing for senior, lead or consulting roles. There it is independent proof that you have done the work at a senior level and can apply the BABOK framework under pressure.

If you are a few years into your BA career and your hours already meet the rule, it is a strong next step. If you are new to business analysis, focus on getting hands-on experience first. The ECBA gives you the vocabulary while you do.

CBAP certification FAQs

How many questions are on the CBAP exam?
120 multiple-choice, case-study and scenario-based questions, with 210 minutes to answer them.

Can I take the CBAP exam online?
Yes. You can take it online with a remote proctor or in person at a PSI test centre.

How many times can I retake the CBAP exam?
You get up to three attempts within the one-year window that starts when IIBA approves your application. Each retake is paid separately.

What is the difference between the CBAP and the CCBA?
The CCBA needs 3,750 hours in the last 7 years and 21 PD hours, and its exam is 130 questions in 180 minutes. The CBAP needs 7,500 hours in the last 10 years and 35 PD hours, and is aimed at senior analysts.

Do my PD hours have to come from an IIBA-endorsed provider?
IIBA asks for 35 hours of professional development aligned to the BABOK knowledge areas within the last four years. An Endorsed Education Provider's certificate states the hours and is the simplest proof to submit.
