ECBA certification guide 2026: exam, cost and how to prepare

By Stephen Adindu, CBAP, PMP, Lead Coach at The Career Accelerators. Last updated October 2026.

The ECBA (Entry Certificate in Business Analysis) is IIBA's first-level business analysis certification, and you don't need any business analysis experience to take it. There's no separate application: you buy the exam in your IIBA account, then have six months to sit it. The exam is 50 questions in 75 minutes, taken online with a remote proctor. IIBA sells it as a bundle for US$395 or less, which includes IIBA membership and a practice exam.

This guide covers who the ECBA is for, what changed in the 2025 exam, what it costs, how it compares with the CCBA and CBAP, and how to prepare.

Key takeaways
  • No experience needed. IIBA's ECBA Handbook (May 2026) lists no work-history or professional development requirement.
  • No application step: buy the exam, then schedule it within six months.
  • 50 questions in 75 minutes, about two-thirds of them situation-based.
  • The bundle costs US$395 or less and includes membership, the exam and a practice exam.
  • IIBA lists no recertification for the ECBA, unlike the CCBA and CBAP.

What is the ECBA certification?

The ECBA is the foundational level of IIBA's three core certifications. It shows employers that you understand how business analysis works: the core concepts, the main tasks and the common techniques. It's aimed at people starting out, such as career changers, graduates, and people in roles next to business analysis who want to move into it.

It isn't proof that you've worked as an analyst. That's what the CCBA and CBAP are for. Think of the ECBA as a way to learn the vocabulary and show you're serious while you build hands-on experience.

What changed in the ECBA exam in 2025?

IIBA moved all English ECBA exams to a new format on 21 July 2025. Three things changed:

  • More time. The exam went from 60 to 75 minutes for the same 50 questions.
  • More real-world questions. About two-thirds of the questions now describe a situation and ask what you'd do. The rest test core concepts.
  • A broader base. The exam now draws on The Business Analysis Standard as well as the BABOK Guide. It covers 30 business analysis tasks, 29 underlying competencies and 20 techniques, organized around the Business Analysis Core Concept Model.

The certificate itself didn't change. If you're using study material from before mid-2025, check that it matches the new format.

How do you get ECBA certified?

1. Create an IIBA account
Then go to the Certification menu and choose ECBA.
2. Buy the exam
No application or approval step. Your six-month window starts when IIBA receives payment.
3. Study and practise
Use the practice exam (up to two attempts) to find your gaps.
4. Sit the exam online
Remote proctored through PSI. You get a pass or fail result on screen.

Two rules to know before you book. You need to give at least 48 hours' notice to reschedule or cancel, or you lose the exam fee. And if you don't pass, each new attempt is a separate fee that isn't included in the first purchase.

How much does the ECBA cost in 2026?

Item Cost (USD) Notes
ECBA bundle US$395 or less Includes IIBA membership, the exam, the practice exam and IIBA's learning journey.
Student pricing US$315 or less Depends on your region.
Retake Separate fee Not included in the first purchase. IIBA lists rewrite fees on its fees page.
Recertification None IIBA lists no recertification for the ECBA.

IIBA shows some prices only after you log in, and they can vary by region, so check your account before you buy.

What does the ECBA exam test?

The exam blueprint has nine domains. The first three come from The Business Analysis Standard: what business analysis is and the mindset behind it. The other six follow the BABOK Guide's knowledge areas through the lens of the six core concepts: change, need, solution, stakeholder, value and context.

Because most questions are situational, memorising definitions isn't enough. A typical question describes a stakeholder disagreement or a vague requirement and asks for the best next step. You need to recognise which task applies and why.

How should you prepare for the ECBA?

  1. Learn the core concepts first. Make sure you can explain change, need, solution, stakeholder, value and context, and how they connect. They tie the whole exam together.
  2. Work through the knowledge areas. Learn what each task is for and when you'd use it, not just its name.
  3. Practise situational questions. Take the practice exam early to find weak areas, then again near the end.
  4. Apply it to something real. Write user stories, map a process or interview a "stakeholder" for a small project. Real practice makes the scenario questions far easier.
  5. Book a date. Your six-month window starts at purchase, so pick a date that gives you a steady study plan.

How we prepare ECBA candidates at TCA

The Career Accelerators is an IIBA Endorsed Education Provider. Our ECBA exam preparation runs live and online over five weekends. It includes a breakdown of the BABOK Guide, mock exam simulations, a study group, and support with your exam booking.

Is the ECBA worth it?

If you're new to business analysis, the ECBA is a low-cost way to learn the fundamentals in a structured way and to show it on your CV and LinkedIn. It also gives you the BABOK vocabulary you'll use in interviews.

Be realistic about what it does. On its own, the ECBA won't get you a BA job. Employers hire analysts who can show what they've done. Pair the certificate with practical work, such as a portfolio project, requirements you've written, or a process you've improved. Once you have the hours, move on to the CCBA.

ECBA certification FAQs

Do I need experience to take the ECBA?
No. IIBA's ECBA Handbook (May 2026) lists no work-experience requirement and no application step.

How long is the ECBA exam?
75 minutes for 50 questions, since the July 2025 update. Older guides that say 60 minutes are out of date.

Can I take the ECBA online?
Yes. It's delivered online with a remote proctor through PSI.

How long do I have to take the exam after buying it?
Six months from the day IIBA receives your payment.

Does the ECBA expire?
IIBA lists no recertification requirement for the ECBA. The CCBA and CBAP both renew every three years.

Should I take the ECBA or go straight to the CCBA?
If you have 3,750 hours of business analysis work in the last seven years, including 900 hours in each of two knowledge areas or 500 in each of four, plus 21 professional development hours and two references, go for the CCBA. If you don't, start with the ECBA.
