CCBA certification guide 2026: eligibility, cost and exam

By Stephen Adindu, CBAP, PMP, Lead Coach at The Career Accelerators. Last updated October 2026.

The CCBA (Certification of Capability in Business Analysis) is IIBA's mid-level certification for business analysts with two to three years of experience. To qualify you need 3,750 hours of business analysis work in the last seven years, 21 hours of professional development in the last four years, and two references. The exam is 130 scenario-based questions in 180 minutes. IIBA charges a US$145 application fee, then US$250 for the exam if you're a member or US$405 if you're not.

This guide covers who the CCBA is for, how to check you qualify, what it costs, what the exam tests, and how it compares with the CBAP.

Key takeaways
  • The CCBA is for working analysts with about two to three years of experience.
  • Your hours must include 900 hours in each of 2 knowledge areas, or 500 hours in each of 4.
  • Requirements Analysis and Design Definition makes up 32% of the exam, the biggest single area.
  • Once approved, you have one year and up to three exam attempts.
  • You recertify every three years with 60 Continuing Development Units.

Who is the CCBA for?

The CCBA sits between IIBA's entry-level ECBA and its senior CBAP. It's for people who already do business analysis work, whether or not their title says "analyst," and want independent proof of it. It's a common step for BAs who have a few years behind them and are aiming for more responsibility, a bigger employer, or a move to a new country where their experience needs to speak for itself.

If you have... Consider
No business analysis experience yet ECBA: no experience needed, 50 questions
3,750+ hours in the last 7 years CCBA: 130 questions in 180 minutes
7,500+ hours in the last 10 years CBAP: 120 questions in 210 minutes

Are you eligible for the CCBA?

Requirement What IIBA asks for How to check it
Work experience 3,750 hours of business analysis work in the last 7 years List each project with dates and the hours you spent on business analysis tasks.
Knowledge areas 900 hours in each of 2 knowledge areas, or 500 hours in each of 4 Map your tasks to the six BABOK knowledge areas listed in the exam section below.
Professional development 21 hours in the last 4 years, aligned to the BABOK knowledge areas Keep your course certificates. An IIBA Endorsed Education Provider's certificate shows the hours.
References 2 references who have known you for at least 6 months, contactable at a work email address Ask early. Personal email addresses aren't accepted.

The knowledge area rule trips people up. 3,750 hours spread thinly across everything won't qualify. Before you apply, total your hours for each area and confirm you meet one of the two patterns.

How much does the CCBA cost in 2026?

Fee IIBA member Non-member
Application (non-refundable) US$145 US$145
Exam US$250 US$405
Exam rewrite US$195 US$350
Recertification (every 3 years) US$85 US$120

IIBA lists these fees on its CCBA page and notes that the first year of membership is included with the exam. Prices change, so check the page before you pay. Your other cost is preparation, including the 21 professional development hours you need to apply.

What is on the CCBA exam?

The exam has 130 multiple-choice questions, built around scenarios, and you have 180 minutes. You can take it online with a remote proctor or at a PSI test centre. Questions are drawn from the BABOK Guide's six knowledge areas, weighted like this:

CCBA exam weighting by knowledge area (source: IIBA CCBA Handbook, May 2026)
Requirements Analysis and Design Definition   32%
Elicitation and Collaboration   20%
Requirements Life Cycle Management   18%
Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring   12%
Strategy Analysis   12%
Solution Evaluation   6%

Two areas, Requirements Analysis and Design Definition plus Elicitation and Collaboration, make up over half the exam. They're the hands-on core of most BA jobs: getting requirements out of people, then modelling, specifying and validating them. Spend the most time there.

How do you apply for the CCBA?

1. Map your hours
3,750 in 7 years, meeting the knowledge area rule.
2. Finish 21 PD hours
Within the last 4 years.
3. Apply on iiba.org
You have 12 months from purchase to submit.
4. Get approved
Some applications are audited. Approval starts a new one-year term.
5. Book and sit
Each exam purchase is valid for six months. Up to three attempts in the year.

How should you prepare?

  • Study by weight. Give Requirements Analysis and Design Definition about a third of your time, and Elicitation and Collaboration about a fifth.
  • Use your own projects. For each BABOK task, think of when you did it at work. The scenario questions reward people who can picture the situation.
  • Practise timing. 130 questions in 180 minutes is under 1.4 minutes each. Sit at least two full, timed mock exams.
  • Review every wrong answer. Work out why the right option is the best next step, not just a correct statement.

How we prepare CCBA candidates at TCA

The Career Accelerators is an IIBA Endorsed Education Provider. Our CCBA preparation course is instructor-led and runs over four weekends. The certificate of completion shows 36 IIBA professional development hours, more than the 21 you need. You also get a breakdown of the BABOK Guide, a study group, sample exam questions and support with your IIBA application.

CCBA vs CBAP: which should you choose?

It mostly comes down to your hours. If you have 7,500 hours in the last 10 years, with 900 in each of four knowledge areas, go straight for the CBAP: it's the senior credential. If you're between 3,750 and 7,500 hours, the CCBA lets you certify now instead of waiting years. And if you hold both, IIBA renews your CCBA automatically each time you recertify your CBAP.
