Entry-Level Business Analyst Jobs in Canada: How to Land Your First Junior BA Role
Nov 02, 2026
By Stephen Adindu, CBAP, BCS Diploma in Business Analysis, Lead Coach at The Career Accelerators. Last updated November 2026.
To land an entry-level business analyst job in Canada, search every title employers use for the work (junior business analyst, business systems analyst, IT business analyst, business data analyst), then apply with proof you can do it: a process map, a set of user stories and a resume written in the language of the posting. ICTC's analysis of November 2023 to November 2024 postings suggests junior tech roles are becoming less common, so look beyond the obvious listings: short contracts, student programs, government hiring and internal moves are all ways in. Job Bank puts the national median wage for IT business analysts at C$45.13 an hour.
This guide covers the titles to search, what junior postings ask for, where the jobs are, pay, a suggested 8 to 12 week plan, your resume and the "Canadian experience" question.
Key takeaways
|
Which job titles should you search for?
"Business analyst" is only one label for this work. Set up alerts for these too.
| Title to search | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Junior business analyst, associate business analyst | The plainest entry title, often a fixed-term contract. |
| Business systems analyst, IT business analyst, information systems business analyst | Job Bank's core titles for NOC 21221. They seldom say "junior", but some fit a first role. |
| Business data analyst, business intelligence analyst (IT) | Also NOC 21221 titles. Expect more reporting and SQL. |
| Business process analyst, ERP analyst, functional consultant, HRIS analyst | NOC 21221 titles tied to a system or process. A good match if you've used that kind of system. |
| Business management analyst, management analyst | NOC 11201, management consulting. More about operations, less about IT systems. |
| Business analyst co-op, intern, new grad | Routes for students and recent graduates. |
On Job Bank, which shows postings under standard occupational titles, use those titles. On 28 October 2026, "junior business analyst" returned 87 results there, but none of the first 25 had "junior" in the title and nine were business development officer jobs. "Business systems analyst" gave 26 far closer matches.
Don't overlook an internal move
Your first BA job may be with your current employer. Volunteer for system changes (documenting a process, testing a new tool, gathering your team's needs), then apply internally with that work as evidence.
What do entry-level business analyst postings actually ask for?
Expect experience requirements even on "junior" roles. ICTC's August 2025 Digital Economy Pulse, using Vicinity Jobs data on November 2023 to November 2024 postings, found the most common request for business systems specialists (NOC 21221) was three to four years across all sectors (five to six within tech). ICTC also reports that junior positions are becoming less common.
Job Bank says employers usually want a bachelor's in computer science, business administration, information systems or a related field, or a college computer science program. The job isn't regulated, so there's no licence to get.
To see what "junior" means in practice, we read four postings advertised by one staffing agency, Randstad Canada, between July and October 2026: three titled Junior Business Analyst and one Project Support Analyst role the ad describes as a junior BA job. It's a snapshot, not a survey.
| What the posting asked for | Postings (of 4) |
|---|---|
| Fixed-term contract (6 to 12 months) | 4 |
| On-site or hybrid work (none fully remote) | 4 |
| Domain or system knowledge (for example PHIPA health privacy, SAP invoicing, procurement) | 4 |
| Hands-on requirements gathering and process mapping | 2 |
| Public-sector experience (as a nice-to-have) | 2 |
| User stories and acceptance criteria, SQL, and Jira or Confluence (all in the same posting) | 1 |
| A required minimum of experience (two or more years) | 1 |
| A university degree | 1 |
In this small sample, "junior" meant a short contract, which can still give you Canadian work history and a reference. Every posting wanted some domain or system knowledge, so BA roles in a field you've worked in are worth targeting. One even required an active LinkedIn URL on the resume.
Where are junior business analyst jobs in Canada?
By sector. Job Bank says IT business analysts work in IT consulting firms and in the IT units of private and public organizations. Management consulting professionals (NOC 11201) work in consulting firms, across both sectors, or for themselves. On 28 October 2026, analyst postings on Job Bank came from employers including BMO, Bell Canada (some are management analyst roles), Best Buy Canada, Vale, the City of Calgary and the Government of Nova Scotia.
In government. Federal IT jobs sit in the IT group, at levels IT-01 to IT-05, and IT business analysis falls under the IT Business Line Advisory Services stream. You apply on GC Jobs. You don't need to be a Canadian citizen to apply, but in external hiring, eligible veterans and then Canadian citizens and permanent residents who meet the requirements get preference. The minimum education is a two-year post-secondary program in a relevant field, and education from outside Canada must be assessed by a recognized service. Budget 2025 also plans to reduce the federal public service by about 40,000 positions by 2028-29, mostly through attrition, so expect fewer federal openings. Provinces and cities hire analysts too, as the Nova Scotia and Calgary postings show.
By city. Job Bank's three-year outlook (2025 to 2027, updated 10 December 2025) for IT business analysts:
| Region | Job prospects, 2025 to 2027 |
|---|---|
| Halifax Region (NS) | Good |
| Vancouver Island and Coast Region (BC) | Good |
| Ottawa (ON) | Moderate |
| Lower Mainland-Southwest Region, including Greater Vancouver (BC) | Moderate |
| Toronto (ON) | Limited |
| Calgary Region and Edmonton Region (AB) | Limited |
| Montréal (QC) | Limited |
"Limited" doesn't mean no jobs. For Ontario, Job Bank cites few new positions, a moderate number of retirements and several unemployed people with recent experience. Where prospects are limited, your proof of work and network must do more.
How much do entry-level business analysts earn in Canada?
Job Bank doesn't publish pay by experience level, so there's no official "entry-level salary". Here's what it publishes for "Analyst, Business - Computer Systems" (NOC 21221) nationally, converted at 37.5 hours a week for 52 weeks.
| Job Bank figure | Hourly | About a year |
|---|---|---|
| Low (about the 10th percentile) | C$30.67 | C$59,800 |
| Median | C$45.13 | C$88,000 |
| High (about the 90th percentile) | C$62.50 | C$121,900 |

Don't read the low figure as a starting salary. Job Bank says its wages don't account for years of experience, and that low wages might offer some insight into salaries for some entry-level positions. The posting itself is a better guide; see the FAQ below on pay ranges. For pay by province, see our guide on how to become a business analyst in Canada.
How do you become hireable in 8 to 12 weeks?
This is the plan we suggest if you're starting from a non-BA job with around 8 to 10 hours a week. It won't guarantee an offer, but it gives you something to show at every stage.
| Weeks 1 to 2: Pick targets and learn the basics Choose two or three titles and set alerts. Learn requirements elicitation, process mapping, user stories and stakeholder analysis. |
| Weeks 3 to 5: Build three pieces of proof Take a real process at work, in a volunteer group or a small business. Map it as it is and as it should be, write 8 to 10 user stories with acceptance criteria, and run one SQL or Excel check on its data. |
| Weeks 4 to 8: Add a certificate if it helps IIBA's ECBA needs no business analysis experience: 50 questions in 75 minutes, online. IIBA's bundle (membership, exam, practice exam and learning journey) costs US$395 or less, depending on region. |
| Weeks 5 to 6: Rewrite your resume and LinkedIn Lead with your BA projects and use the posting's own words. See the next section. |
| Weeks 6 to 12: Apply and meet people Send a few tailored applications each week. Talk to agency recruiters who fill BA contracts, and go to IIBA chapter events (chapters include Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver). |
| Weeks 8 to 12: Prepare for interviews Write four or five STAR stories (situation, task, action, result), and practise walking an interviewer through one of your artefacts in five minutes. |
Is the ECBA necessary? No: none of the four postings in our snapshot asked for a certification. It gives you a structured syllabus and a credential while you build experience; our ECBA certification guide has the details.
What should your resume and LinkedIn show?
A junior BA resume has one job: show you can do the work, in the top third of the page.
- A clear target. Use the posting's title in your headline, for example "Junior Business Analyst: requirements, process mapping, SQL".
- Projects near the top. For each, give the problem, what you produced (process map, user stories, requirements), the tools and the result.
- Past jobs in BA terms. If you've gathered requirements, improved a process or worked between customers and a technical team, say so, with numbers.
- The posting's words. If it says "acceptance criteria" or "swimlane diagrams", use those phrases where they're true for you. If a posting says AI is used to screen applicants, matching its wording matters even more.
- Canadian norms. Job Bank advises two pages at most, no photo, and no personal details such as age or marital status. Never include your Social Insurance Number.
- Honest labels. List training and volunteer projects as projects, not as jobs you held; see the risks of lying on your resume.
Give your LinkedIn profile the same headline and link to your samples.
How do newcomers handle "Canadian experience"?
Treat a request for Canadian experience as a question about risk: will you communicate well, work to local norms and bring references the employer can check? You can answer that without years of Canadian work history.
Ontario's Human Rights Commission said in 2013 that a strict Canadian experience requirement is prima facie discrimination. Since 1 January 2026, Ontario's Employment Standards Act also sets these rules for public job postings by employers with 25 or more employees:
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| No Canadian experience requirements | The posting and application form can't require Canadian work experience, education credentials or an established professional network. |
| Pay must be shown | Expected pay or a range (with exceptions above C$200,000). |
| AI screening must be disclosed | The posting must say if AI is used to screen, assess or select applicants. |
| Interviewed applicants hear back | Within 45 days of your last interview, the employer must tell you whether a hiring decision has been made. |
The rules don't apply to employers with fewer than 25 staff, to the Crown and its agencies, or to postings open only to current employees. Ontario's Act also doesn't cover federally regulated jobs such as banks.
- Get a Canadian reference early. A short contract, a volunteer BA project or a structured live project gives you someone to vouch for your work.
- Use free settlement services. Permanent residents, protected persons and certain other groups can get free IRCC-funded help finding a job. Since 1 April 2026, economic-class permanent residents can use it for a limited time only, so start early. Quebec runs its own services.
How TCA prepares business analysts for a first role
The Career Accelerators is an IIBA Endorsed Education Provider. Our business analysis coaching program runs for 12 weeks in a live virtual classroom, and no prior experience is required. Its 15 modules cover topics including requirements elicitation, BPMN and UML modelling, business and software requirements documents, the BA's role in testing, and SQL fundamentals, using Jira, Confluence, Zephyr, MockFlow, MS Visio and SharePoint.
At its core is a 12-week live project, where you work as a business analyst on a real-life tech product. The live project comes with a work reference, so you finish with deliverables to show and a reference. The program also includes one-on-one mentorship, a comprehensive CV review, access to an in-house HR expert, an intensive mock interview once you're invited to a BA interview, and on-the-job support. We also share job opportunities through our industry partners and contacts. These are opportunities, not guaranteed placements.
For one example, Iga moved to Canada in 2022 and worked as an insurance advisor while she trained. She finished TCA's business analysis program in January 2023, had a business analyst offer the next month, and credits the live project with helping her in the interview. Read Iga's story.
Entry-level business analyst jobs: FAQs
Can I get a business analyst job with no experience?
Yes, with proof of practice. Postings for this occupation most often ask for three to four years, so bring portfolio pieces, aim at junior contracts and internal moves, and search every title above.
What does a junior business analyst earn in Canada?
There's no official entry-level figure. Job Bank's national range for IT business analysts runs from C$30.67 to C$62.50 an hour (about C$59,800 to C$121,900 a year), across all experience levels. Use the pay range in each posting. In Ontario, employers with 25 or more staff must include one in public postings made since 1 January 2026, and in BC all employers have had to since 1 November 2023.
Are there business analyst internships and co-ops in Canada?
Yes, mostly for students. The Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) keeps its main inventory open year-round, including IT jobs. You must be a full-time student at an accredited secondary or post-secondary institution, meet the local minimum working age, and return to full-time studies next term; final-year students qualify only if they've worked under FSWEP, the Co-op/Internship Program or the Research Affiliate Program before. Citizens and permanent residents get preference. Not a student? Look at new grad programs and short junior contracts.
Is Toronto or Ottawa better for a first BA job?
Job Bank rates the 2025 to 2027 outlook as moderate in Ottawa and limited in Toronto, so expect more competition in Toronto. Federal jobs have their own rules on preference, education and credential assessment.
Stephen's tip: Take one deliverable to every interview, such as a process map or a set of user stories, and be ready to walk the panel through how you made it in five minutes.
